The Importance of Knowing Your History

Fair enough.

It is.

"After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites,

they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance.

The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.

Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten.

 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors,
another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel."

Joshua 2:6-10

"One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh:
but the earth abideth for ever.
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down,
 and hasteth to his place where he arose.
The wind goeth toward the south,
 and turneth about unto the north;
 it whirleth about continually,
and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
All the rivers run into the sea;
 yet the sea is not full;
unto the place from whence the rivers come,
thither they return again.
All things are full of labour;
man cannot utter it:
the eye is not satisfied with seeing,
nor the ear filled with hearing.
 The thing that hath been,
it is that which shall be;
and that which is done is that which shall be done:
 and there is no new thing under the sun.
Is there any thing whereof it may be said,
See, this is new?
 it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
There is no remembrance of former things;
neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after."

Ecclesiastes 1:4-11

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”― Edmund Burke (in a letter addressed to Thomas Mercer).
That's the short version, attributed to Burke. A longer version reads as follows:

"Whilst men are linked together, they easily and speedily communicate the alarm of any evil design. They are enabled to fathom it with common counsel, and to oppose it with united strength. Whereas, when they lie dispersed, without concert, order, or discipline, communication is uncertain, counsel difficult, and resistance impracticable. Where men are not acquainted with each other’s principles, nor experienced in each other’s talents, nor at all practiced in their mutual habitudes and dispositions by joint efforts in business; no personal confidence, no friendship, no common interest, subsisting among them; it is evidently impossible that they can act a public part with uniformity, perseverance, or efficacy. In a connection, the most inconsiderable man, by adding to the weight of the whole, has his value, and his use; out of it, the greatest talents are wholly unserviceable to the public. No man, who is not inflamed by vain-glory into enthusiasm, can flatter himself that his single, unsupported, desultory, unsystematic endeavors, are of power to defeat the subtle designs and united cabals of ambitious citizens. When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle."
–Edmund Burke, Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents 82-83 (1770) in: Select Works of Edmund Burke, vol. 1, p. 146 (Liberty Fund ed. 1999).

Every moment is another opportunity to show by your actions who you serve.

"But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
Joshua 24:15

Do not be misled:
“Bad company corrupts good character.”
 Come back to your senses as you ought,
and stop sinning;
for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.

1 Corinthians 15:33-34

I would like to stress the importance of building a believing community.

Don't go it alone.

Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

-and let's not merely talk about building a believing community.

All hard work brings a profit,
    but mere talk leads only to poverty. - Proverbs 14:23

This is an invitation to join in the work!

Acts 2:38-42

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you,
in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
 And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them,
 “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”
Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

May the Love of the Father be overflowing from your hearts
and if we sleep before the Lord Jesus returns,
may our gravestones proclaim Joshua 4:21-22 & 1 Thessalonians 4.

OP1 (2018)

The couple between myself and Lauren are Ronnie and Uncle Bill.

We have adopted them as family.

I did a contracting job with Uncle Bill at a widow's house about 3 years ago.

Ronnie was Lauren's bus driver.

Ronnie came to Christ and has been filled with joy ever since!

Lauren and Ronnie reunited at church and Lauren was asked to be the maid of honor and Ronnie and Bill's wedding.

They asked if I could film the wedding but I had already decided to work for MediaQuest that day.
The MediaQuest job was to get up @ about 4:30 AM, dress up in a suit, drive out to get video equipment to a hospital in Pittsburgh, set up two cameras, and record presentations for a couple hours.

The MQ job was canceled by the client and MQ never told me.

When I finished setting up in the hospital lecture hall, I realized that there was nobody there.
Time went by and it was 7 AM and still nobody was there for the conference that was starting at 7.

I called MQ.

The client had canceled the previous night.

Ronnie and Bill's wedding was that day.

God got me to Pittsburgh, in a suit, with camera equipment, and a free day.

God was working in all the events of that day.
