College Life

Hello from the long lost "Originator" of this blog. I think I've made one post the entire time this blog has been running. All I can say is that I am very thankful to have two cousins who are much more faithful to updating posts and keeping folks informed on current events than I am (and also much better writers to boot).

I'm sitting in the basement of the ASU library, watching the snow fall and thinking about the next few weeks that lie ahead. I think the term "busy" sums it up... but that word is used so much and so lightly, that it definitely doesn't convey everything I want. In fact, I often use it as a filler. Whenever folks asked me, "What have you been up to recently?" and I responded, "Oh, I've been busy with school stuff." I really mean, "I don't think you really want to know, and if you do you're strange because it's not all that interesting to most folks, so here's what I'll tell you instead of going into the details." Well, here are the details.

I am currently working through three class projects, all programming related. The first is an assignment for my dad's class that deals with caching. Caching is basically a method that allows the computer to access data that you use over and over again in a quick fashion (using fast memory for the stuff you access regularly and slower memory for less frequently accessed data). I won't go into more detail than that, but if you want to know more about it, check out this link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cache_(computing)). I am also working on a program in Prolog for my programing languages class that functions as a lexer for a language called WREN. If you want to know what a lexer is, take a look at this link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexical_analysis). The last project I am working on is a homework set for my statistics class. In that class we are using a language called R to work out statistics problems.

I also have at least two exams looming in the near future which I am going to have to start studying for soon.

When I am not studying (i.e. procrastinating), you will generally find me reading on my new Kindle. I am currently halfway through "The Great Divorce" and have read several Sherlock Holmes mysteries, as well as most of the Inheritance Cycle and various Chesterton poems (I may be enjoying my new gadget a bit too much...).

So, to all of you who are wondering, "What is David up to these days?"... Well, I'm busy.

David - It is great to hear from you, especially since there were dark rumours... Good to hear a bit more detail about what you've been up to. Thanks for making the blog accessible again. Emily loves it. Keep up the good work; I'm sure you'll finish strong!
